The Roya valley,

from Mercantour to the Mediterranean

Around 40 million years ago, a small river of around sixty kilometers was born between the geological folds of the Ligurian Alps and Mercantour. Its north-south orientation allows the Mediterranean climate to rise to almost 1000m in the upper valley, and the numerous perpendicular tributaries allow for as many microclimates. Furthermore, the fascinating geology of this space traces the history of the Earth. This is followed by varied living environments, from dry and fragrant scrubland to dark forests, high-altitude meadows, cultivation terraces and exceptional biodiversity. Many endemic species, orchids, arthropods, birds and other animals have been able to settle there over the centuries.

Furthermore, this historic crossroads passed many times from one duchy/county/kingdom to another, places of meeting and exchange, of battles, of commerce, on one of the main salt routes, has been enriched by a multi-millennial culture. The vestiges of past activities are numerous, but above all, the traditions continue with numerous festivals in each village.

Today, various farmers, artisans and artists provide quality production. Tourist activities, if well managed, can provide a good complement to populations to compensate for relatively rare jobs.

A valley to discover and where to return...

To see in Roya-Bévéra valley

On the other hand, the landscapes and treasures of Roya and Mercantour are worth it. You generally have to go for a day or even over several days to really enjoy it, and it is therefore advisable to prepare accordingly.

Furthermore, it is preferable to avoid leaving alone, without knowing a minimum of the places, without a map, without a pharmacy, without a raincoat. Many paths are no longer maintained, the steep slopes lengthen travel times, the border areas are steep, exposed to storms, and there are barbed wire fences in various places. It is therefore best to visit these places with someone who knows the area well.
